In his preface to the 2016 Awards, Singapore Packaging Agreement Board President Ong Lye Huat agrees that “there is still a lot of room to improve industry participation and companies` commitment to reducing packaging waste.” In addition, spa and SPA prices clearly indicate that consumer awareness and education about waste is as important as reducing packaging and waste at the manufacturing level. But in 2016, only one of the 20 laureates showed consumer-focused awareness or information work. Because packaging is so common but not used, we need to find ways to reduce and consume it more sustainably. The SPA is a good start for reducing Singapore`s packaging waste. Over the past decade, BSG signatories have together reduced nearly 39,000 tonnes of packaging waste and saved US$93 million “in equipment costs for locally consumed products.” Now that there is a mandatory packaging report to be implemented by 2021, companies must submit an annual report on the amount of packaging they put on the market and on their plans to reduce their packaging waste. The government will work with stakeholders in different industry sectors to explore how these technologies can be applied in Singapore, so that they are both environmentally and economically sustainable. We will continue to call on stakeholders to holistically assess the benefits of other measures to improve plastic waste management. For example, the imposition of a levy on single-use plastic bags may re-envy demand for biodegradable paper or bags that, from a life cycle perspective, may not be more resource efficient.

This is because the production and disposal of all materials have some influence on the environment. That`s why we will work to manage the overconsumption of all types of packaging and disposable items. The packaging is not all bad. It extends the shelf life of food and protects new products from damage during transport. But the problem is excessive packaging. That`s why we`re introducing measures to encourage companies to produce sustainably by reducing upstream packaging. To help companies implement sustainable packaging waste management practices, the Singapore Manufacturing Federation has partnered with the National Environment Agency to implement a new industry-run program called the Packaging Partnership Program (PPP). In 2018, about one-third of the household waste disposed of was packaging waste. About 55% of packaging waste was plastic packaging, 25% paper packaging.

The remaining 20% were other packaging materials such as metal and glass. 16 companies receive 3R Packaging Awards [News] By Monica Kotwani, Channel NewsAsia, 3 July 2012. 16 companies received the 3R Packaging Awards on Tuesday for their efforts to reduce waste from product packaging.
